Theyazin opens Municipal Councils forum

MUSCAT: His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, will preside over the opening of the Municipal Councils Symposium 2023, organised by the Ministry of Interior, and the launch of the Tanmia application at Al Bustan Palace Hotel today.

The two-day symposium will discuss a number of working papers.

The first session will review the developmental and societal roles assigned to the members of the municipal councils to develop governorates in accordance with the Municipal Councils Law.

Dr Salem bin Sulaiman al Shukaili, Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law, will present the first working paper on local administration and municipal councils in the Sultanate of Oman.

The second working paper will be presented by Saleh bin Ali al Mahrouqi from the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs during which he will review the powers assigned to municipal councils.

The second session of the symposium will deal with the developmental role of the municipal councils.

Said bin Rashid al Qatabi, Director of Social Sectors at the Ministry of Economy, will present a working paper on the role of the municipal councils in local economic development.

The second working paper will be on municipal councils and the development of the governorates in 'Oman Vision 2040' and will be presented by Eng Abdullah bin Yousef al Hammadi, General Supervisor of the Priority of Development of Sustainable Governorates and Cities at the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit.

On the second day of the symposium, the first session will be dedicated to talking about the media aspects of municipal councils.

Dr Abdullah bin Khamis al Kindi, Head of the Media Department at Sultan Qaboos University, will present a working paper on the media skills of the municipal councils members.

Ahmed bin Abdullah al Amri, Manager of Tanmia Application Project at the Ministry of Interior, will present a working paper on the Tanmia application.

Tanmia app, set up by the Ministry of Interior, is a digital interface for the municipal councils, a link between Omani society and municipal councils in the governorates.

It is designed to enhance communication and boost transparency and trust between individuals and institutions which leads to achieving sustainable development and improving municipal work.

The second dialogue session of the second day of the symposium will be dedicated to talking about the integrated roles between municipal council members and the governors and will be addressed by HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, and Sayyid Khalifa bin Al Mardas al Busaidy, Secretary-General at the Ministry of Interior.
