5-year fisheries investment strategy unveiled in Oman

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MAFWR) has rolled out a strategic plan, offering lucrative investment openings for the management and operation of fish markets in the Sultanate of Oman. Locations identified for private sector investment include Al-Seeb, Barka, Salalah, Samayil, and the islands of Shaleem and Al-Halaniyat.
The main thrust behind these initiatives is to bolster private sector participation in Oman's fish market management, with an emphasis on job creation and support for the national economy. MAFWR has outlined a 5-year investment period, with interested companies urged to register promptly through the Esnad platform.
This move is in sync with MAFWR's broader mission to elevate the fisheries sector's impact on the national economy, recognizing its role in job creation and economic expansion.
Recent data from the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) paints a promising picture, revealing that the total value of domestically caught fish in Oman exceeded RO 285.857 million by September 2023, marking a robust 12.9% surge from the same period in 2022.
Artisanal fishing in Al Wusta Governorate takes the lead, boasting the highest quantity of domestically caught fish at 180,501 tons, signaling a substantial 26.1% increase. North Batinah Governorate closely follows, recording 116,268 tons, a notable 14.8% rise, while South Sharqiyah Governorate registers 92,686 tons, marking an impressive 13.3% increase.
The cumulative quantity of domestically caught fish by artisanal fishing in Oman reached 483,984 tonnes by September 2023, showcasing a commendable 19.5% surge compared to the same period in 2022.
