Abdurakhmanov strikes as Kyrgyzstan shock Oman

MUSCAT: Kyrgyzstan defeated Oman 1-0 in Group D of their Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the Fifa World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 tie on Tuesday.
At Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek, Odilzhon Abdurakhmanov netted the winner for Kyrgyzstan in the 49th minute to give his team the thrilling three points to revive their hopes in the group after their defeat in the opening match against Malaysia. The triumph meant, Kyrgyzstan tasted their first victory in the qualifiers and obtained the first three points while Oman’s credit remained in previous three points from their win against Chinese Taipei last week.
Hosts Kyrgyzstan began the match with better focus and came close in the ninth minute when G Alykulov tried to send a strong ball from outside the box but his ball went away from the net.
Oman’s initial presence in the first half came in 15th minute as Harib al Saadi tried from long distance after a rebound but his strike went off the target.
Coach Branko Ivankovic’s men came back to control the midfield. Mohsin al Ghassani and Esam al Subhi worked hard to push towards Kyrgyz goalkeeper Tokotaev. In the 32nd minute, Abdullah Fawaz created a great attempt by sending a cross which reached Zahir al Aghbari who lacked focus to send the ball little away from the target. The first half ended in a goalless draw.
In the following half, the hosts under supervision of coach Stefan Tarkovic, pressed hard seeking for the opening goal. Kyrgyzstan received great support from their home crowd that encouraged the players to show their best performance.
In the 49th minute, the opponent shocked Oman with a goal by Odilzhon Abdurakhmanov who managed to send a right-footed shot from the centre of the box to the top centre of the goal.
Oman coach Branko made some substitutions by entering Omar al Fazari, Omar al Malki and Mataz Saleh as replacement of Abdullah Fawaz, Ahmed al Khamisi and Zahir al Aghbari respectively.
Kyrgyzstan pressed hard to add their second goal but could not find a way while Oman players were also busy in pressuring towards to the penalty box of the opponent but the attempts did not find the target as the match ended in favour of Kyrgyzstan at 1-0.

Ahmed Al Khamisi led the defending line with company of Ahmed al Kaabi, Mohamed al Amri and Khalid al Braiki.
