Teams drawn in Elite and Challenger groups based on rankings

Muscat: The draw for 53rd edition of His Majesty the Sultan’s Hockey Cup was held under the auspices of HH Dr Sayyid Faris bin Turki al Said at the Grand Millennium Hotel on Monday evening.
The drawing ceremony was attended by the members of Oman Hockey Association and representatives of 10 clubs participating in this edition, namely Ahli Sidab, Al Seeb, Sohar, Al Ittihad, Mirbat, Al Nasr, Muscat, Salalah and Saham.
The top-prize money HM Cup competition will begin on November 29, while the final ceremony will be on December 19.
Al Nasr Club were crowned champions of the 52nd edition in 2022 after defeating Ahli Sidab Club 5-2 in the final match at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
TWO GROUPS
The championship divides the participating clubs into two groups. The Elite group includes Ahli Sidab, Al Seeb, Sohar, Al Nasr and Salalah. The Challenge group includes Dhofar, Muscat, Al Ittihad, Mirbat and Saham.
The division is based on the general classification criteria for the clubs participating in the 2022 competitions, as well as Oman Hockey League 2023, also according to the latest updates in international competitions in force in the Asian and international federations.
The competition system stipulates teams to compete with each other in a one-round league system to determine the ranking of the clubs in each group. The first three teams from the Elite group qualify for the final round, the fourth-placed team from the Elite group competes with the second-placed team from the Challenge group and then the winner will qualify for the final round. The fifth-placed team from Elite group competes with the first in the Challenge group and the winner will qualify for the final round.
The total number of clubs qualifying for the final round is five 5 clubs.
The Elite group matches will be played at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. The matches of the Challenge group will be played at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Dhofar.
FORMER CHAMPIONS
The Oman Club had won the title in editions of 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975, the Al Ahly Club 1976, 1977 and 1978, the Al Nahda Club 1979 and the Al Nahda Club 1979. In addition, the best player, top scorer and best goalkeeper will receive a souvenir and a financial reward of RO 100.
