Artificial Intelligence: Moderation is the best solution

The education sector is grappling with a new challenge of Artificial Intelligence. The issue is forcing educators and scholars to brainstorm as to how should the education system change to address, incorporate, or challenge today's AI systems.

Experts are divided over the use of AI. Some call the adoption of it in the education system a compromise with the values and ethics, while others are in favour of its use in moderation.

Dr Ali al Bimani, Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Science & Technology, called Artificial Intelligence a valuable tool if used in moderation. He, however, cautioned that overdependence on technology could be counterproductive, with consequences like loss of critical thinking skills and compromise on ethics.

'It can be a valuable tool for students, offering personalised learning, research assistance, and homework support when used responsibly and in moderation. However, overdependence on AI can hinder critical thinking, raise ethical concerns, exacerbate technology gaps, and compromise data privacy. Balancing AI use with developing essential skills and ethical awareness is crucial for responsible integration into education.' It is essential, thus, for educators and institutions to strike a balance and ensure that students develop critical thinking skills and ethical awareness alongside their use of AI technology.

The intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and education sparks a multitude of engaging conversations.

Expert views need to be noted because this new technology has an impact on almost every sector.

Some question AI's role in learning, cognition, and human interaction. Others guide educators in preparing students for active participation in societal issues such as information integrity, the impact on employment, and energy consumption.

Others shed light on the rights of educators and students concerning AI and urge educators to contribute their expertise to the ongoing discourse about AI's future in society and industry.

There is no doubt about the technology's influence and its revolutionising impact on the entire education system. E-learning platforms and educational institutions are making substantial investments in AI integration. According to reports, the AI in Education sector is projected to surpass $20 billion by 2027.

One of the most significant systemic challenges is the need for educators and institutions to adapt to AI's evolving landscape.
