Many wilayats in the northern governorates of Oman received rain on Sunday, not just due to the local cloud formations of the Al Hajar Mountains.
At play is an easterly trough, according to the weather forecaster at Oman Met Office.
“The trough is a common feature during winter in Oman,” said a weather expert at Oman Met Office, indicating that the current weather condition is to last for three days until Tuesday.

“Indeed, we are in the winter pattern, so it is natural to have troughs form now in the northern part of the Sultanate of Oman. So troughs will continue to pass through, but the effects of the troughs will vary from one to the other,” noted the weather forecaster.
This also indicates the diminishing of tropical systems as the winter pattern sets on. “The chance for tropical systems that could affect Dhofar is very weak now,” he said.
Jabal Shams has gone down to 6.2 degrees Celsius, recording the lowest temperature in Oman. The highest temperature recorded was 35.6 degrees Celsius at Qarn Alam.
The week began with low clouds and fog formations over the Al Sharqiyah South Governorate and various parts of the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman on Sunday morning.
Later, cumulus clouds expanded over the Al Hajar Mountains, and scattered rain fell over parts of the mountainous areas of the Al Dakhiliyah and Muscat governorates, with chances of them developing and extending and thunderstorms falling later.
Close to midday, cumulus clouds formed over parts of the Al Hajar Mountains (mountainous areas of Muscat, Al Batinah South, Al Dakhiliyah, and Al Sharqiyah North), with chances of their expansion and occasional scattered thunderstorms later.
Some of the wadis recorded heavy water flow with strong currents, as seen in Qurayat and Al Rustaq. In Rustaq, motorists chose to park on the road shoulders as the rains got heavier. As horizontal visibility was low, the drivers had to use lights during the afternoon rains.
“On Sunday, places that got most of the rain are the mountainous areas of Al Batinah South, Al Dakhiliyah, and Al Sharqiyah North,” said the weather forecaster.
On Monday, advection of medium and high clouds is forecast over most of the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman with chances of convective clouds development and isolated rain, occasionally thundershowers over the Al Hajar Mountains and adjoining areas towards the afternoon and evening. There are also chances of low clouds or fog patches at late night to early morning along parts of the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea.
