MUSCAT: The organising committee of the World Amateur Chess Championship Muscat 2023 continues to prepare for hosting this anticipated sports championship, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East region. The championship would be hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Oman Chess Committee (OCC), from November 1 to 11 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
The number of registered participants for the championship has reached 430 players, including 357 male players and 73 female players, representing 64 countries. They will compete in three rating categories: ‘1700’ with 270 participants (210 male, 60 female), ‘2000’ with 74 participants (48 male, 26 female), and ‘2300’ with 74 participants (69 male, 5 female).
The wide participation emphasises Oman's status and good reputation in hosting tournaments, reflecting the enthusiasm of players to participate in this significant global championship, which holds widespread attention.
In preparation for the championship, the OCC organised the first international preparatory tournament at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex from September 21 to 23. The aim was to test and evaluate all the preparations for hosting and improve them in preparation for the World Championship.
As an extension of these preparations, the committee will also organise the second preparatory tournament for the participants in the World Amateur Chess Championship from October 19 to 21. It is expected to have the participation of several national and international amateur players residing in the Sultanate of Oman. The OCC aims to elevate the rating level of Omani players through this event.
The OCC is exerting every effort to provide a unique experience for the participants and the audience, enhancing its position as a leading international sports destination in the world of chess. Hosting the championship in Oman is a testament to the efforts made and reflects the confidence of the International Chess Federation in the capabilities of the Oman Chess Committee to organise and succeed in this global championship. This success is reaffirmed by Oman's successful hosting of several championships in the past, further solidifying its position as a significant international sports destination.
The Omani Chess Committee aims, through this tournament, to enhance the chess base in the country by attracting more players and umpires and encouraging the establishment of new chess teams in the clubs. They also aim to elevate the international ranking of several of their players, contributing to the development and growth of the game in Oman.
