In the heart of Oman, a land known for its expansive deserts and scorching sun, the Omani burqa has been a time-honoured tool to protect against the harsh elements. Traditionally worn by Bedouin women, this veil has shielded their faces from the relentless heat and swirling sands. However, it’s also become a canvas for artistic expression through the endeavours of a small business named ‘The Magical Burqa,” owned and managed by the talented Maryam al Muqbali.
Maryam embarked on her journey with ‘The Magical Burqa’ project on May 28, 2022, while pursuing a degree in business administration at Sohar University. Simultaneously, she is a gifted artist who envisions her creations as a harmonious fusion of Omani culture and art. When asked about her aspirations, Maryam passionately said, “My goal is to combine Omani culture and art.”
Her journey began with a profound love for her culture and a natural talent for drawing.
Maryam emphasises that her small business provides her with a unique platform to express her artistic concepts and convey her thoughts and emotions to society modern and innovatively. Every piece she crafts is imbued with deep meaning, drawing inspiration from nature, art, experiences, and more. Her belief is that customers don’t merely purchase a product; they invest in a reflection of their emotions – love, beauty, authenticity, strength, and belonging.
In less than a year, Maryam has sold over 200 burqas within Oman and internationally in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Her work even gained recognition when “A Magic Burqa,” photographed by Tasneem al Sawaqi, was featured in the 20th Digital Horizons Student Forum.
Reflecting on the challenges she encountered, Maryam recalls the doubts and questions that initially clouded her path. She questioned whether society would accept her idea if she could effectively communicate it, and if she possessed the courage to bring it to life. But her unwavering love for her craft and her faith in its power propelled her forward. She was determined to create a magical experience that seamlessly merged the past and the present.
For Maryam, one of the most rewarding aspects of her business is the opportunity to share a part of Omani culture with those who may have little or no prior knowledge of it. She derives immense joy from sharing art, love, and culture with people, recognising the enrichment and inspiration that sharing brings to both the giver and receiver.
Maryam’s latest creation, ‘The Power of Colour and Women,’ draws inspiration from nature and features vibrant colours mirroring Oman’s natural elements like water, flowers, and minerals. These colours symbolise the flow, growth, and brilliance of life. The materials used in crafting these burqas embody softness, flexibility, and authenticity – attributes that mirror the essence of a woman’s being.
Maryam describes her journey of “The Magical Burqa” as a mirror reflecting loving and meaningful thoughts and messages. Her journey from conception to creation has produced exquisite pieces of art and served as a bridge between cultures, sharing the rich tapestry of Omani heritage with the world. Through her small business, Maryam al Muqbali continues to weave artistry, culture, and tradition into the fabric of contemporary life.
