Preparations under way for Majlis elections

Elaborate arrangements are under way for flawless electoral process for the Majlis Ash'shura elections for the 10th Term as the Ministry of Interior prepares for the October 29 ballots.
Besides dedicating a voting app which can be downloaded on both Apple and Android phones for ease of use, and a website to provide all relevant information. The team designated to carry out the elections process is working round the clock for a flawless and hassle-free elections.
Speaking to the Observer, Sumaya al Balushi, member of the media team of the Election Department at the Ministry of Interior, said that there has been an overwhelming response from the voters especially the new ones predominantly women for the elections process.
“Multi-layered preparations are currently going on for the elections on October 29, as we are seeing an overwhelming response from the voters who are getting ready to cast their ballots. The number of newly-registered voters during this period reached 139,963 male and female voters, and North Al Batinah Governorate stood on top with the highest number of voters in the electoral register,' she said.
'Besides, anyone can file a grievance against the names included in the preliminary lists of voters with a request submitted through the elections website, within five days from the date of announcement of these lists, indicating the reasons for objections and attaching the documents supporting it.'
The ministry has announced the preliminary lists of voters to elect the members for the 10th Term, through the ‘Intekhab’ application and the elections website ‘elections.om’ where the number of voters stood at 753,952, including 362,924 women.
Majlis Ash’shura consists of members who represent different wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman elected by direct secret ballot. The wilayats shall be represented by two members if the number of its population exceeds 30,000 and by one member if the population is less than 30,000. The term of the member shall be four years and the chairman and his two deputies are elected from the members.
The Majlis shall, at an extraordinary sitting to be convened at the invitation of His Majesty the Sultan, elect its chairman and two deputy chairmen. The elections are conducted as per the procedures stipulated in these regulations. The chairman shall assume functions as soon as his election has been announced.
