MUSCAT: The Gulf Football Association (GFA) will be the new official name of the association instead of the previous name Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF). This decision was approved during the Executive Office meeting which was held recently in Kuwait in presence of Shaikh Salim al Wahaibi, Chairman of Oman Football Association (OFA). During the meeting, which was headed by Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al Thani, Chairman of GFA, the association also announced that Kuwait will host the upcoming 26th edition of Gulf Cup Championship in December 2024. Kuwait was the host city for the 23rd edition of the Gulf Cup where the Red Warriors were the champions in January 2018.
The last Gulf Cup of 25th edition was held in Iraq in January 2023 and the hosts managed to claim their fourth title after they defeated Oman 3-2 in the final clash in Basra city.
The meeting of the GFA featured different topics including the revision and amendments to the statute and organisational structure of the federation. The members reviewed also the possibility of organising new events and championships for the age categories. The federation forwarded this task to be studied and analysed by the competition committee to decide the appropriate dates for holding them during the coming period of the year.
The members of GFA were briefed on the report of the inspection committee’s delegation to Kuwait ahead of Kuwait’s hosting next edition of the Gulf Cup. The report was delivered by Jassim bin Sultan al Rumaihi, Chairman of the Inspection Committee. He updated all the members on the host country’s readiness for the tournament and the current situation of the sports facilities and hotels.
It was agreed to provide the Kuwaiti Federation with the committee’s report to review it and work on its implementation as well as intensifying visits during the coming period to follow up on the progress of work in various sports facilities, in particular on construction work at Jaber Mubarak Al Sabah Stadium.
