Salalah to host second Ironman 70.3 tomorrow

The Dhofar Municipality is to unveil the second edition of the Dhofar Municipality Ironman 70.3 Championship, set to take place at Hawana Resort Salalah from September 21 to 23. The championship is a part of this year's spring season activities and is officially sponsored by the Dhofar Municipality in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, among other government agencies and private sector entities represented by Hawana Salalah and Sohar International.
The main event, Ironman 70.3 triathlon, will be held on September 23. It begins with a 1.9 km swimming, continues with 90.1 km bike course and concludes with a 21.1 km running.
The activities of this event include joint sports exercises to transfer expertise and experiences, a race for children, and a racing village that includes many tourist and entertainment activities.
Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar municipality, emphasised the significance of this event. 'This event aligns with the commencement of the Asurb (spring) season in September. The primary goal of organising such tournaments is to boost sports and cultural tourism within the Dhofar Governorate, showcasing its tourism and cultural offerings on a global stage.'
'Participants and visitors in this tournament are directed to enjoy the atmosphere of this global event and to enjoy the beauty and tourist sites that characterise the governorate, as the nationalities participating in this event are diverse and include approximately 400 athletes. They
travelled specifically to participate in this tournament, in addition to about 100 athletes from Oman, with more than 50 international nationalities.'
Marwan bin Abdul Hakim al Ghassani, Director of Promotion at the General Directorate of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, emphasised the Ministry's commitment to partnering with international events that contribute to enhancing tourism movement and
economic returns, establishing Oman as an ideal host for major sporting and tourism events.
Eng Wael al Lawati, CEO of Moria Company, expressed enthusiasm about hosting one of the world's largest sporting events and reiterated their dedication to supporting initiatives that position Oman as a leading tourist destination.
Al Lawati said, the Ironman 70.3 Salalah Championship promises three days of excitement and showcases the natural beauty and amenities of Hawana Salalah, making it a year-round hub for sports, entertainment, and cultural diversity.
Khalil Salem al Hudaifi, from Sohar International, added: “The event will showcase Oman's potential as a global sports event host. The sports industry has been duly identified as a pivotal strategic sector, possessing limitless potential. Not only to enhance the tourism and entertainment industry but also to raise Oman’s global status as a major destination for hosting international sporting events.
