The Ministry of Education and the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) announced the winners of the Namat Competition 2022-2023. This year in its third edition, Namat is an annual competition organised by ESO to encourage and recognise action for sustainability and environmental consciousness among government school students, parents, and staff.
Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi , Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education, handed over the awards for the winning innovative contributions. The best entries received up to RO 1,000, thanks to the support of Veolia Oman, an environmental management company.
Dr Amor al Matani, President of Environment Society of Oman, expressed gratitude to the participating schools and their communities for their unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability.
Dr Almatani said, 'We thank the Ministry of Education and Veolia Oman for their integral role in advancing this educational initiative. While the winning teams take their
well-deserved place in the limelight, their contributions are set to inspire other young minds, their parents, communities, and teachers across Oman. The success of these teams will hopefully ignite a movement towards a greener and more sustainable Oman.”
Dr Al Matani added, “The Namat Competition not only encourages students to develop innovative environmental solutions but also fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the environment. By engaging young minds, this initiative plays a vital role in shaping future leaders who will contribute to the sustainability of Oman. We invite all schools, students, teachers, and communities to join us for the fourth edition of the Namat Competition. We eagerly anticipate the fantastic contributions and ideas that school teams across Oman will bring forth in the upcoming year.'
This year's Namat Competition focused on the themes of water management, waste management and energy management, encouraging participants to explore ways to improve sustainability at their schools and minimise the environmental impact of human activities on schools, communities, and the environment. The nine winning schools were selected from over 50 entries from across Oman, while the teams showcased their abilities, commitment and contributions towards a greener and more sustainable future.
Erwan Rouxel, CEO of Veolia Oman, said, “We are invested in the creativity, commitment, and ambition shown by all the participating teams, which can make a real impact on where they live and study. Veolia Oman is more than happy to make sure some great awards were on offer to celebrate the winning teams’ desire to make a sustainable change for themselves and their communities.”
