MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MoAFWR) says it supports calls for retail prices of fish to be prominently displayed at the local fish souq.
The endorsement came in a post over the weekend in response to social media appeals by consumers calling for transparency in fish pricing at the local souq in Jalaan Bani Bu Ali (JBBA) in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.
The rising prices in the Jalan Fish Market have been a topic of concern among local residents, sparking discussions about the need for intervention by the Consumer Protection Authority. Prices in the fish market at Jalan Bani Bu Ali have been notably higher compared to other regions, leaving residents seeking fair and reasonable pricing.
Taking to social media, consumers have demanded that the central market in Jalan Bani Bu Ali provides customers with a comprehensive pricing list for all types of fish, whether on a fixed or variable rate basis, and on a weekly or recurring schedule.
The Ministry, along with the Consumer Protection Authority, have been steadfast in their calls for pricing transparency in fish sales. As winter approaches, a season marked by increased demand for fish and vegetables, the importance of careful market monitoring becomes clear. In response, the Ministry is collaborating with other agencies in ensuring a level playing field for both customers and traders.
