CPA warns against price hike during Khareef

Prices of essentials during the Khareef season are well under control. Dedicated officials are on duty checking on any undue price hike in and around Dhofar Governorate, according to an official from the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA).

Speaking to the Observer, the official urged all commercial entities to follow the price range as they used to be pre-Khareef season, and anyone found to be charging additional amounts on any goods or services will be subject to legal procedures.

This comes in the wake of the recent visit of Salim bin Ali al Hakamani, Chairman of the CPA, who visited the Governorate of Dhofar to check on the situation of the markets, to learn about the efforts made by consumer protection in stabilising them, and to witness the progress of work in monitoring and organising them.

'Due to the vast expansion of economic activities in the Dhofar Governorate, the business and economic scenario is thriving, and it pays to have better monitoring of the market to ensure the quality of services provided to the consumer,' said Salim bin Ali al Hakamani, Chairman of the CPA.

He further said that any price hike due to any valid reason should get prior approval from the concerned authorities, failing which will incur remedial measures to be taken against them.

His statement comes in the wake of a slew of complaints where some of the commercial establishments were charging extra for the goods or services delivered in view of the tourist influx during the Khareef season.

During the visit, Salim bin Ali al Hakamani met with Mohammed bin Saif al Busaidy, Wali of Salalah where they reviewed the Authority's efforts in Dhofar Governorate during the Khareef season, and the efforts made to stabilise the markets as a result of intensifying field monitoring and follow-up operations and taking the necessary legal measures against violators.

The Consumer Protection chief was also briefed on the role and efforts made by the concerned department in monitoring and verifying consumer observations, examining complaints and reports and dealing immediately with them, at the level of following up on the markets by intensifying oversight and forming work teams.

The CPA Chief also visited a number of markets, centres and shops in Dhofar Governorate to determine their status and the availability of all goods that consumers needed, in addition to ensuring that all suppliers adhere to the rules and regulations issued regarding consumer protection.
