Renovated Taqah Castle a major khareef draw

 
SALALAH: Since its restoration and reopening, Taqah Castle, a historical gem located in Dhofar’s Wilayat of Taqah, has been pulling in significant numbers of visitors eager to enjoy its distinctive architecture and heritage up-close.

More than 3,000 visitors have toured this landmark over the past 45 days since its grand unveiling.

Taqah Castle, according to Amir bin Mohammed bin Salim, in-charge, the castle is a two-storey architectural marvel. It encompasses a watchtower (Al Barza), a guards' chamber, a compact holding area, heritage exhibition hall, multiple chambers, storage for weaponry and provisions, the governor's suite, children's enclave, council chamber, and three security towers.

The castle's ground level accommodates the heritage gallery, storage for arms and provisions, and a series of chambers, while the upper floor houses the governor's quarters, spaces for daytime and evening relaxation, a fully equipped kitchen, the governor's private chamber, and a children's area within the council chamber.

With a history tracing back to the 19th century, this castle originally served as the dwelling of the Wali of Taqah, the local governor, before transforming into a military barracks and later a prison. In 1994, it underwent extensive restoration, transitioning into a captivating museum open to the public.

Taqah Castle has emerged as a beloved tourist hotspot, offering a captivating window into Oman's rich heritage and cultural tapestry. Additionally, it has become a cherished venue for weddings and various events.

Having undergone restoration in 2018, the castle witnessed comprehensive repairs to its walls, towers, gates, and the installation of modern lighting and signage. Since its reopening, Taqah Castle has emerged as a must-visit destination. Its strategic location overlooking Taqah town and the picturesque surrounding landscape provides breathtaking vistas of the Qara Mountains and the Arabian Sea.

This castle also serves as a repository of historical treasures, housing a captivating array of weaponry, pottery, and jewellery. Visitors can delve into the castle's storied past and its pivotal role in Omani culture.

The substantial influx of visitors to Taqah castle stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Oman's historical heritage. The restoration initiative has not only safeguarded this invaluable landmark but has also ensured its legacy for generations to come.
