The timeless folktales of Oman have found their way into the heart of the Indian audience through translation from Arabic to Malayalam, offering readers a vivid glimpse into a bygone era of Oman.
Haroon Rasheed translated the tales and aptly titled Omanile Nadodikathakal or Folktales of Oman.
The book has 17 carefully selected stories, expertly narrated and thoughtfully organised, which serve as windows into the rich tapestry of Omani cultural traditions and societal beliefs. The myths and legends hidden in the stories have long played a pivotal role in shaping moral boundaries and establishing the fundamental principles governing interactions within Omani society.
Haroon, who has called Oman his home for nearly two decades, shared his perspective on the importance of these tales, stating, 'The myths and legends of this society have always held a special allure for me, as they often serve as the bedrock upon which a nation's culture is built.'
Haroon's connection to Oman goes back to his childhood when he would visit his father, an employee of Oman's Ministry of Health. Ever since he returned to Oman nearly two decades ago, his life has been intricately woven with the towns of Ibra and Barka.
In addition to this remarkable translation project, Haroon has previously translated several works by Khalil Gibran into his native tongue. He has also authored a notable book, ' Experiences Sans Prefaces,' which delves into the remarkable social service contributions and the repatriation of expatriate remains by PM Jabir, a social activist in Oman for nearly four decades. This book received widespread acclaim worldwide.
Omanile Nadodikathakal has been published by 'Minnaminni,' an imprint of Mathrubhumi Books, with distribution in Oman handled by Al Bhaj Books. TV Gireesh has designed the cover.
