Indian expatriates in Oman, predominantly those from the south, gathered at various hotels of the Sultanate of Oman, celebrating the harvest festival -- Onam -- in the past few days which will continue over the coming weekends for next three months.
They celebrated Thiruvonam on Tuesday but celebrations were on since a week ago which ensured participation of all in all the activities of the festival fervor.
Onam is usually celebrated with traditional floral decorations on the floor, elaborate feast and people wearing the authentic golden threaded sarees and dhotis.
Various hotels and restaurants have been busy offering sadya packages and vied to add the number of side dishes anything from 4 to 40 around the plantain leaf on which food is served.
All eateries have been abuzz with people celebrating Onam while many families are celebrating Onam with their close relatives with traditional floral carpet and delicious meals at homes cherishing the childhood memories.
“Onam brings in nostalgic vibes and it is a passage to the past and our own childhood. Luckily, we are able to celebrate Onam in Oman much better and larger in size than we used to do back home, thanks to the country and the ruler of Oman,” said Jagajith Prabhakaran, MD of Cochin Gold who held a massive Onam celebration for his friends and staff members.
A delicious 'sadya', an extensive lunch with scores of side dishes, is served on a banana leaf platter, from forenoon until evening and is arranged on a pre-booking basis.
Various associations and other NGOs are organising festivities and cultural celebrations which culminate in the delicious 'Onam Sadya', which is also a treat made of vegetables that accompany traditional rice on the plantain leaf.
History of Onam
Onam, also known as the 'Harvest Festival of Kerala', is celebrated on the tenth day of the Malayalam month 'Chingam' which is called 'Thiruvonam', and is a combination of myths, folklore and traditions. Onam is one of the great occasions where Malayalis rejoice together and reaffirm the values of harmony and coexistence.
Onam, for those who celebrate, brings in memories in abundance and most of them are connected to childhood days. As the myth aptly indicates an era of sweet memories, people rejoice those days of their days with their dear and near ones.
Omanis join their expat friends in celebrations:
Omani friends of those who celebrate Onam in Oman, joined their friends in their joy and celebrations and made Onam theirs too with active participation in floral decorations and enjoyed a sumptuous feast called ‘Sadya’ while participating in the fun-filled energizing activities that followed.
The Omani friends, along with their families make it a point to join their expat fraternity in celebrating the feast festival at the hotels as well as their homes and share the joy and camaraderie.
