Mentoring programme for young Omani women continues to gain momentum

MUSCAT: The ‘Tamkeen’, a mentoring programme of the British Embassy has been evoking great response as 46 phenomenal women came together in a spirit of shared learning and collective growth in early June.

These women represent the 23 mentor and mentee pairs participating in Phase 1 of the initiative launched on International Women’s Day in March 2023 amidst a gathering of key dignitaries and high-profile guests.

Working in collaboration with UK delivery partners Mowgli Mentoring, Tamkeen provides one-to-one mentoring between experienced women leaders and Omani women who are early in their career.

'Each Tamkeen phase lasts 6 months, alongside a robust series of workshops and networking events to bolster the benefits and opportunities for participants,' a spokesperson from the embassy said.

Tamkeen builds on the British Embassy ‘Lift as You Grow’ mentoring programme, which supported 25 pairs in 2021 and 45 in 2022. Phase 2 of Tamkeen will launch in January 2024, expanding the mentoring support outside of Muscat to deliver a tailored programme for women in Nizwa and Suhar.

The British Embassy continues to actively champion and promote the valuable role women play in supporting the labour market and growth of Oman’s economy.

There is resounding evidence that women’s economic empowerment requires due consideration to enable sustainable economic growth. The Sultanate of Oman has many skilled women, with 73 per cent educated to secondary level. The Embassy will continue to champion this incredible talent pipeline of women to reach their full employment potential.

The Tamkeen programme aligns with Oman Vision 2040’s ambitions on equal opportunities, which pave the way for Oman’s international rankings for women and gender equality to be enhanced even further.

The British Embassy organised an event focusing on women entrepreneurship, possibilities and challenges at the embassy premises on the International Women's Day.
