MUSCAT: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said that Al Rusayl-Bidbid road expansion project is progressing well according to the plan with the implementation rate currently standing at 70 per cent. The road is expected to open during the first quarter of next year.
The project involves construction of additional two more lanes and flyovers, pedestrian bridges and viaducts.
Eng Yousef bin Abdullah al Mujaini, Director of the Road Construction Department at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said: “Many parts of Al Rusayl-Bidbid road expansion project have already been opened to traffic, and the entire road will be opened next year as the construction work is progressing as per schedule. A total of 18 km of the road has been constructed including 4 km of interim diversions starting from Al Rusayl intersection in the Wilayat of Al Seeb to Fanja in the Wilayat of Bidbid.'
The project involves a number of bridges (the implementation rate of the flyovers reached 93 per cent), valley bridges (the implementation rate of which has reached 90 per cent). The work is under way at two pedestrian bridges, while two other bridges are under supply process. All bridges will be completed in the coming months, the official said.
The total length of the project is 27 km starting from Al Rusayl-Nizwa intersection to Al Sharqiyah Expressway intersection.
The project faced several setbacks through the various implementation phases and all of which have been overcome successfully. The challenges include the mountainous terrain and round-the-clock heavy traffic on the strategically important road connecting the governorates of Al Dakhiliyah, Al Wusta, Dhofar, North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Sharqiyah to Muscat Governorate and the rest of the governorates, he added.
