Taqah Castle: A historical gem reveals its splendour to the public

 
Taqah Castle in the Dhofar Governorate has opened its doors to the public following an extensive restoration and maintenance project, coinciding within the Khareef Dhofar season.

Taqah Castle, considered as a revered historical landmark, was erected in the 19th century under the reign of Sultan Taimur bin Faisal al Said (1913-1932), and served as the administrative hub for the local region.

It located in the ancient neighbourhood of Taqah, and it stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of antiquity and modernity. Meticulous efforts have been made to preserve and enhance the castle's original charm, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship and traditional practices that shaped the lives of Taqah's inhabitants in past eras and visitors will be transported back in time as they explore its exhibits, offering a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and daily lives of the local community.

This remarkable restoration project, undertaken by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism this year, in order ensures that Taqah Castle stands as a proud symbol of the region's history, spans two floors with unique features.



The ground floor includes a prison, a reception hall, a guard’s room, and storage rooms which reflects the fort's multifunctional nature. Moreover, moving to the upper floor, visitors will encounter watchtowers and the family quarters of the Wali (governor), offering a sight into the splendour and strategic significance of the castle.

Ali al Maashani, Director, Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar, told the Observer that he was delighted to witness the grand reopening of Taqah Castle, which is a historical gem that holds immense significance in Dhofar's heritage.

'Taqah Castle's architectural splendour, adorned with ancient colours and intricate details, is a testament to the artistry of our ancestors. The recent restoration efforts have breathed new life into the castle, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship and reflecting the noble traditions of the Omani people and our Arab and Islamic architectural civilisation,' Al Maashani said.

Situated approximately 34 kilometres east of Salalah, Taqah Castle is easily accessible to visitors. Opening hours are from 9 am to 4 pm daily and on Friday from 8 am to 11.30 am. Entry to this historical castle is free, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Taqah's heritage without any financial barriers.

The commitment to its maintenance ensures the readiness of castle to welcome visitors while prioritising their safety. This reopening comes at a more opportune time, coinciding with the Khareef Dhofar season, when tourists from near and far flock to the beautiful region, eager to experience its rich history and cultural heritage.
