Oman U23 Team defeat Yemen to advance into semis of West Asian U23 Championship

 
The Oman U23 team advanced to the semifinals of the National Airlink West Asian U-23 Championship. In a tight clash which was held at Al-Madinah International Stadium in Baghdad, Oman defeated Yemen with an impressive 3-0 win in the second match of Oman in the tournament.

Oman team demonstrated in the match by applying intense pressure which resulted an early goal in the seventh minute. An own goal from Yemen's defender, Mohammad al Faili, put Oman in the lead. Despite Yemen's attempts to reduce the score, the Omani team's resolute defence thwarted all their efforts. The first half concluded with Oman maintaining a 1-0 lead.

Following the halftime break, the coach of the Omani national team made two strategic substitutions, which proved pivotal in further asserting their offensive prowess. The team intensified their pressure on Yemen, leading to a penalty kick in the 53rd minute, successfully converted by Nasser al Rawahi, extending Oman's lead to 2-0. Yemen's team continued their determined approach, earning a penalty kick in the 81st minute. However, Omani goalkeeper Mazen Saleh showcased exceptional skill by blocking the kick, preserving his team's clean sheet. In the extra time, Oman capitalised on their high-pressure strategy, securing a third goal through substitute Osama al Hadabi, ultimately sealing their victory with a final score of 3-0.



In recognition of his outstanding performance, Omani national team defender Khaled al Ghatarifi was awarded the title of Best Player of the Match.

This round of the tournament witnessed several remarkable occurrences, as the Jordanian national team staged a stunning comeback against the UAE national team, overcoming a one-goal deficit to secure a 2-1 victory, despite playing with ten man after the expulsion of Daniel Afaneh, becoming the first player in this edition to receive a red card. Furthermore, Iran achieved the most impressive lead of the tournament thus far, scoring two goals within a span of five minutes and ultimately defeating the Syrian team with a 3-1 victory.

The Oman national team's exceptional performance and qualification to the semifinals signify their strong position in the National Airlink West Asian U-23 Championship. As the tournament progresses, they remain determined to showcase their skill and sportsmanship while competing against the region's top teams.
