World Blood Donation Day: Give blood, save lives

Oman needs at least 100 units of blood to meet the demand in all the hospitals but the supply is way down, according to the Department of Blood Bank Services under the Ministry of Health.

People who meet the requirements of blood donation, organisations and other groups of people have been urged to take part in the blood donation drive that the department initiated.

'We need a minimum of 100 blood units of blood a day for usage in all the hospitals in the country but the supply is drastically less. We need more people to come forward to support the drive and any healthy person between the age of 18 and 65 can donate blood,' said Dr Zainab al Araimi, Director at the Bausher Blood Bank.

The department, from time to time, organises blood donation campaigns in association with embassies and other organisations and there are many mobile blood donation services in use which travels from wilayat to wilayat for collecting the blood units.

Several organisations have been conducting blood donation camps in support of the drive. The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Blood Bank Services is conducting a blood donation campaign under the slogan ‘Your act of kindness brings colour to people’s lives! Give Blood, Give Life’ on Wednesday June 14 to coincide with World Blood Donation Day. Donors will be welcomed through the main entrance of the ROHM to take their seats in the donation clinic set up in the South Porch from 9am until 6pm the same day.

'Blood donation drive is an important initiative that help address the shortage of blood at Oman’s blood banks, and more individuals, organisations and other people bodies should come forward to help and support the national blood donation drive,' said Dr Zainab.
