Omani adventurer climbs highest peak of Svalbard’s Arctic archipelago

OSLO: Omani adventurer Suleiman bin Hamoud al Na’abi reached the highest mountain peak in the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic (Mount Newton summit), at a height of approximately 1,700 metres above sea level.

Al Na’abi said that his adventure began on April 12 when he accessed Longyearbyen area of Svalbard archipelago. He pointed out that he experienced unpredictable environmental and climatic conditions that posed one of the most difficult challenges.

'Those conditions tested my ability to withstand various levels of hardship and I pursued my determination to climb Svalbard archipelago at such low temperatures and later climb to the top of Mount Newton,' he said.

Al Na’abi said that temperature at the summit reaches minus 40 degrees. Other challenges include tackling the lack of vision caused by a sudden snowfall, coupled with strong winds that forced him to continue covering his face and wearing special glasses, in addition to the presence of predators like the polar bear, arctic wolf and foxes. - ONA
