Human traits versus machines

True, it’s pretty hard to talk about technology today without artificial intelligence. It is everywhere... and growing!

So, what if a computer solves a problem that involves human traits like common sense? It may not be a surprise to see our individual qualities like empathy and humour, intuition and emotion, creativity, and kindness are automated!

True, many problems that humans take days and months to figure out will be solved by computers in real time. However, despite their caliber, machines are not able to solve puzzling questions, especially those related to making instantaneous moral decisions.

It is because humans can make decisions based on their quick analysis of the surroundings and the situation. Computers can only provide decisions based on programs they are fed with. They’re not affected or influenced by emotions, feelings, wants, needs, and other factors.

Additionally, the human brain also has the ability to learn from experience, adapt to new situations, and make decisions based on context. This was the summary of a workshop on “Will the computers of tomorrow possess some of the traits that today are seen as uniquely human?”

“Humans learned and invented things during their different stages of transition. But artificial intelligence is different. Computers are fed with data instead of being taught. Therefore, there is no process as learning from experience”, experts at the workshop opined.

Computers can take in and process certain kinds of information much faster than we can. They can swirl that data in their so-called “brains,” and perform calculations to conjure multiple scenarios at superhuman speeds.

Computers enjoy other advantages over people. They have better memories, so they can be fed a large amount of information, and can tap into all of it almost instantaneously.

Artificial intelligence is omnipresent. From social media to public service, people are interacting with artificial intelligence or AI every single day. Whether you make a chat request on a website or trigger a quick voice search via voice assist, you will find that AI is working behind the scenes.

True, it’s pretty hard to talk about technology today without artificial intelligence. It is everywhere... and growing! People are using it to operate their businesses more efficiently. The fact is that it’s resulting in safer and more useful products.

Companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, and Amazon are working with AI and creating amazing devices! Apple’s Siri, Google Now, Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft’s Cortana are digital assistants that help users perform various tasks.

But the fact is that the technology behind artificial intelligence is much older than we would imagine. Even there are the myths of mechanical men in Ancient Greek and Egyptian Myths! Although the term artificial intelligence has been around since the mid-20th century, computers have been around the world for much longer. The first work which is now recognized as AI was done by Warren McCulloch and Walter Pits in 1943.

In the coming years, we are going to witness even more growth, along with plenty of new research and ideas. There will be monumental breakthroughs in AI development that will enhance productivity and help developers get to the production side and release their solutions more rapidly.

However, a warning was also sounded against the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. “We certainly need to keep our hands carefully on AI so that we control the machines rather than the other way around”, the workshop was told.

Computers can be programmed with vast libraries of information, but they can’t experience life the way we do!
