Authorities have advised people to be modest in their appearance and respect the cultural values of the country while being outside of their homes and dress appropriately as the country upholds modesty in all its forms.
Both visitors and residents have been urged to follow the dress code befitting the culture and tradition of the country, especially during Ramadhan, respect the local heritage and tradition and abide by the cultural values and not to infringe the cultural values of the country.
This is equally applicable to those who visit public places, shopping malls, parks and beaches as there have been concerns from local residents that their values have been hurt owing to poorly dressed visitors in their premises.
While dresses that cover knees and shoulders are recommended for both men and women, they are also advised to refrain from wearing clothes that reveal their body, and or tight or low cut dresses when visiting a public place in the country.
The Public Affairs Committee of the Municipality of Muscat, at its fourth meeting earlier, reviewed the proposal to issue a decision or a local order to apply the legislation on modest dress when entering commercial complexes.
A proposal to issue a decision or a local order to apply the legislation on modest dress when entering commercial complexes and markets, in accordance with the council’s terms of reference contained in the Municipal Council Law No. (116/2011) in Article (22/16) within the limits of the state’s general policy and development plans.
'Wearing dresses with no concern for the culture and heritage of the place where they are living is not one's personal liberty but is tantamount to hurting the sentiments of the local population,' said Amer Salem al Hasani, member of the Board of Directors of Muscat Municipality.
He added that establishing a kiosk at the international gateways of Oman are currently in the pipeline to educate visitors and tourists to this country.
In addition to adhering to the Omani Penal Law No (7/2018) in its article (294/a), to contravene and punish everyone who appears on the roads and public places in a way that violates public modesty or contradicts the traditions and customs of Omani society.
Accordingly, any citizen or resident can report such dressing law violation in public places to the judicial control whose whereabouts will be kept confidential.
