Muttrah Souq all set for Qaranqasho

Muttrah Souq is all set to welcome the increasing number of families just before the Qaranqasho, which will be held on Wednesday.

Hundreds of shops inside this historic market are lit in beautiful, Arabic lanterns (fanoos) at night while the colourful home decors and glitters illuminate the premises during the day.

'We are hopeful of receiving more children just prior to the Qaranqasho and we have loaded our shops with the colourful glitters, dresses and other festival decorations aimed predominantly at the children as Qaranqasho is meant for them,' Abdulazeez, a shopkeeper spoke to the Observer.

Qaranqasho is a delightful social tradition usually celebrated in the middle of the holy month of Ramadhan as a means of encouraging the children who have been fasting from the beginning of the holy month. Children go out after iftar and Maghrib prayer in organised groups chanting popular songs related to this beautiful tradition.

'Apart from the days before the two Eid occasions, Qaranqasho is a major attraction for our customers as we get families in large numbers. We know what the children and adults need for this occasion and we fill our shops with just that days before the Qaranqasho,' another expatriate shopper said.

By and large, Qaranqasho is deemed to be an enhancement to social communication while teaching children good manners as they go out in groups and socialise with each other. 'The Qaranqasho is a tradition bequeathed from generations since times immemorial. Our parents and grandparents took part in it and we are happy to see our children too uphold our traditional values,' Badr al Rawahi, a retired official said.
