Omanis, along with citizens of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates, will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) when travelling to the UK from February 22, 2024, according to a statement issued by the British Embassy in Oman. They can apply in advance from February 1, 2024, but before February 22, 2024, and the nationals of these countries will still need to apply for Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) to travel to the UK, as is currently the case.

However, Qatari visitors to the UK will need an ETA when travelling to the UK from November 15, 2023. Nonetheless, they can apply in advance from October 25, 2023, but before November 15, 2023, Qatari nationals will need to continue applying for Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) to travel to the UK.

Jordanian visitors will need an ETA when travelling to the UK from February 22, 2024. However, they can apply in advance from February 1, 2024, but before February 22, 2024, the Jordanian nationals need to continue applying for a UK visa to travel to the UK.

This was announced after the United Kingdom unveiled plans for travel scheme to bolster the border, an electronic authorisation to travel to the UK which will be applicable to all travellers from around the world in 2024.

Accordingly, visitors from the GCC and Jordan will be the first to benefit from the scheme which is expected to enhance the border security and improve the travel experience of UK visitors to the UK.

“By applying to the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme ahead of a worldwide expansion of the scheme throughout 2024, visitors will benefit from smooth and efficient travel. Qatari visitors will be the first to be able to apply for an ETA in October 2023,” a statement from the diplomatic mission said.

The application process will be quick, light touch and entirely digital with most visitors applying via a mobile app and receiving a swift decision on their application. The cost of an ETA will be in line with similar international schemes, and individuals can make multiple visits to the UK over a 2-year validity period, for up to 6 months at a time.

“The scheme will also further strengthen our border, by ensuring robust security checks are conducted on every visitor pre-travel,” a spokesperson from the British Embassy told the Observer.

As part of the application process, individuals will need to provide biometric details and answer a set of suitability questions. This will ensure that the authorities have information on those seeking to come to the UK helping to prevent dangerous individuals, such as criminals, from entering the UK.

‘Strengthening our border remains one of the government’s top priorities. ETAs will enhance our border security by increasing our knowledge about those seeking to come to the UK and preventing the arrival of those who pose a threat,” Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick said.
