‘Gender equality crucial for building nations’

TRIBUTE TO WOMEN

Behind every successful man is a woman. That is passé. When women of a community are empowered with education and skill sets, there is increased and sustainable development in the overall prosperity of the country, as is evident in the Sultanate of Oman.

Statistics indicate the constructive role, achievements, and success stories of women over the past five decades of national action. Women in Oman – both citizens and expatriates – enjoy equal status with men and that is why many hold key positions across sectors, thanks to the attention of the government.

Oman joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day today, a day to recognize women's achievements in different walks of life.

The success of every woman should be an inspiration to other women. They should cheer each other and make sure they are courageous. They believe gender equality is important not only because it is a human right, but because it is essential for building peaceful nations.

Making sure women and girls have equal access to quality education, healthcare, work opportunities, as well as political representation and participation in economic decision-making is crucial to sustainable development and economic progress.

On March 8, women consider the day to honour their accomplishments, as they are an integral part of society. A quote from a Hindu monk and philosopher Swami Vivekananda, says it all. It goes: “There is no chance of the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly on one wing.” In this regard, International Women’s Day calls for all to pledge to further nurture and strengthen ‘the wings of our societies by respecting, acknowledging, and treasuring the contribution of women in everyday lives.

In Oman, women are part of our country’s economic development. I am grateful to the Honourable Lady, the Spouse of His Majesty the Sultan, for her contribution to society, especially towards women's empowerment. According to many women in Oman, they are proud and honoured to have her as their role model.

For others, International Women’s Day is one of the most important global celebrations, which honours the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women globally. Happy International Women’s Day to the women in the Sultanate of Oman.
