The Oman Under-20 team suffered a huge loss in the opening match of the AFC U20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023 as South Korea defeated the national team 4-0 at JAR Stadium on Thursday.
In the same Group C, Jordan registered their first win as they beat Tajikistan 2-0.
The vital triumph of young Taeguk Warriors positioned them in the top order of the group while Jordan are in second place with the same three points while Tajikistan and Oman are in third and fourth places respectively.
The Oman boys did not show up the desired performance in this game as they ended the game with a big defeat.
All the substitutions made by Spanish coach David Gordo in the second half did not yield any positive result for the team.
On the other hand, the Korean side dominated the game and managed to penetrate Oman’s defending line many times and scored on four occasions. The runners-up of the last edition began the match strongly and they were seeking an early goal. Oman’s junior boys controlled the back side and kept the net clean in the early phase of the first half.
Later, the Korean captain took advantage of a missed pass to snatch the ball inside Oman’s half and Kim Yong-hak took the lead for his team in the first-time as he scored the opening goal.
Four minutes later and from a similar scenario, Kim Gyeong-hwan capitalised from the mistake to send a perfect ball to Sung Jin-young who made it 2-0 and ended the first half with the Korean side leading the game.
In the deciding half, Oman’s players tried to enter with different style but the opponents continued their domination. The Korean players aimed to raise the scoring result and they pressed hard to score more goals. Sung Jin-young netted his second goal in the match and third for his team as he received a golden pass from Lee in the 59th minute. After an absence in the match for almost one hour and 20 minutes, Oman’s first real scoring attempt came from substitute Abdulmajeed al Balushi who led a quick counter-attack, supplying the ball to Mohammed Bait Subeea on the right and he drilled an effort from a tight angle, but his shot crept wide off the Korean goal. Ahed al Mashaikhi tried to send a strong ball from 25 yards but it went over the crossbar.
The Korean substitute Kang Seong-jin completed the scoring for his team as he struck the fourth goal in the dying minutes of the game to make it 4-0.
Oman will meet Tajikistan in the forthcoming clash at Lokomotiv Stadium while the topper of the group will take on Jordan at JAR Stadium on Sunday. The second match will be crucial as it will decide the first winner of the last-eight stage from Group C.
Oman coach Gordo started the match with a starting line-up featuring Mazin Saleh as the goalkeeper. The defenders were Osama al Mahruqi, Salim al Abdali, Ayman al Nabhani and Turki Bait Rabee. The center line was monitored by Ahed al Mashaikhi, Sultan al Marzooq and Ali al Balushi. The attacking line were represented by Nasser al Saqri, Khalid al Sulaimi and Salah al Jadidi.
