Oman Golf Association Tee Up Partnership with Sohar Aluminium

Muscat: In an official signing ceremony held at Ghala Golf Club, Sohar Aluminium continued their support of golf in Oman by renewing as a partner of the Oman Golf Association (OGA) for 2023. The partnership agreement was signed by Mundhir al Barwani, Chairman of the OGA and Eng. Said al Masoudi, Chief Executive Office of Sohar Aluminium.
Established in 2009 by the Ministry of Sports Affairs, the Oman Golf Committee was formed to grow and govern the sport of golf in the Sultanate, their efforts and progress were formally recognised in 2020 when the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth announced the formation of the Oman Golf Association. The aims of the Oman Golf Association are to increase participation and awareness in an inclusive way, to develop elite Omani talent, and to use the sport of golf to promote tourism and investment.
Mundhir Al Barwani, Chairman of the OGA is quoted as saying, “We are delighted that Sohar Aluminium will continue as a partner of the OGA. Their signing comes on the eve of the first ever International Series Oman tournament which is part of the Asian Tour, the field of players who will be competing in the Sultanate are extremely high profile and this is sure to raise the interest levels in Oman from overseas, but also will inspire many within the Sultanate to get involved in golf. Through the support of Sohar Aluminium the OGA will be able to continue to grow and develop the game, giving people the opportunity to try the game for the first time, as well as developing our more established players to prepare them to compete at the highest level. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and to His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham bin Tarik Al Said for their unlimited support and guidance.”
At the signing ceremony, Eng. Said al Masoudi, commented: “We are pleased to continue our long-term partnership with Oman Golf Association which further cements our commitment towards the growth and sustainability of golf in Oman. We hope that this will have a clear and direct impact and contribute to achieving the objectives of the OGA to increase awareness and participation of golf in the domestic and international markets and ensure that this sport is used to promote the general interests of the Sultanate, both locally and globally.”
Some of the OGA’s activities that will be supported through the partnership with Sohar Aluminium include GOladies, which is an introductory programme targeted at Omani women and girls, GOjuniors which provides a series of competitions for youngsters to develop their skills and build friendships, and the further development of the Oman National Teams who represent the Sultanate in tournaments at home and abroad in men’s, ladies and under 13, 15 and 18 categories.
The Oman Golf Association’s mission, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Youth is to raise awareness and participation levels for golf in Oman to give golfers of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to play the sport. The Association aims to create an environment that allows beginners to learn and serious golfers to strive to the top, in an inclusive and sustainable way.
The Oman Golf Association (OGA) was established by the Ministry of Sports Affairs on the 14th of January 2009, and is responsible for managing all technical, management, financial and organizational aspects of golf as a sport and its implementation in the Sultanate of Oman or abroad after coordination with the Ministry.
Sohar Aluminium LLC was formed in September 2004 to undertake a landmark Greenfield aluminium smelter project in the Sultanate of Oman and has an annual production capacity of more than 390,000 tonnes of high-quality primary aluminium. It is jointly owned by OQ S.A.O.C, TAQA, and Rio Tinto.
