The Oman Resuscitation Society (ORS) has stressed training NGOs to create a cadre of volunteers who can be helpful during any adverse situation in future.
The ORS is a body of experts in first aid training related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and was formed under the Omani Medical Association to save lives in emergencies.
Speaking to the Observer, Dr Mahmoud al Rahbi, Head of Emergencies at Al Nahda Hospital and President of the Society, said the Society will also raise awareness about the importance of learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation and spreading the culture of first aid to volunteers across the country and mould a society which is through with the life-saving skills.
“We are focusing on developing a generation armed with life-saving skills by helping members of the association to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation besides refining the skills of workers in the health sector with everything related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and providing training, development and educational programmes and supervising them,” said Al Rahbi, adding that NGOs in both local and expat societies are welcome to undergo the training. They can approach the Society to get their volunteers trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Efforts to catch up with the latest methods and means used at the local and global levels will be made on a continuous basis with the support of the Ministry of Health (MoH).
According to Dr Al Rahbi, the idea of establishing the Society was to reduce deaths due to a lack of cardiopulmonary resuscitation experts.
The Society will be finding a database containing the bodies related to CPR courses besides forming various specialised and supportive work teams for training courses. The ORS will be participating in both local and international programmes and activities related to the terms of reference of the Association and in cooperation with the other similar Association and scientific bodies.
“We have plans to host programmes and experts and contribute effectively to holding and organising specialised local and international conferences in cooperation with the OMA and other scientific associations across the region and beyond,” adds Dr Al Rahbi.
