Muscat: The organising committee of the Oman Desert Marathon revealed the details of the eighth edition of international race hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, during January 21 to 24, in the golden sands of Bidiya. Top marathon runners from the world and amateurs from Oman and neighbouring countries have confirmed their participation.
The 165-kilometre race is an opportunity to discover the desert of the Sultanate of Oman, through the four stages of the race, respectively, with a distance of 47 km, 55 km, 42 km and 21 km.
The committee has started registering the participants through a website dedicated to the categories and stages of the race, while field preparations are continuing to make the event a success.
The new edition includes three races for short distances, where the first ‘Jawhara Bidiya’ is for children for a distance of 2 kilometres. The cross-country race is for 5 km and the ‘Al Wasl’ race for beginners and families is for 5 km.
The Oman Desert Marathon is approved by the International Association of Runners, which awarded the next edition 3 points for the marathon represented in the mountain point and confirmation of a distance of 164.40 km with a horizontal height of 1,570 metres.
The Oman Desert Marathon started in 2013, with a distance of 165 km, comprising four stages of natural beauty and scenic views, starting from Al Wasl Oasis in Bidiya and ending with the Jawharat Resort in Bidiya.
The upcoming edition in January was chosen to keep pace with the winter tourism season in the Eastern Sands, which these days hosts huge numbers of foreign tourists and visitors.
