VOX Cinema has stopped regular shows at five theatres in and around the capital area, Suhar and Sur, it is learned.
The shows in other centers of VOX will not be affected.
'As a responsible business focused on long-term sustainable growth, we have identified opportunities to accelerate our progress and deploy our capital more efficiently in order to focus our efforts on areas that will drive our continued growth. As such, we will be closing a number of our older and lower-performing VOX Cinemas sites,' a spokesperson for Majid al Futtaim Leisure, Entertainment and Cinemas said in a statement issued to the Observer upon request.
The shows at its Ruwi, Shatti al Qurum, and Panorama Mall besides its screens in Sohar and Sur are suspended as the agreement with the landlords have come to an end, according to reliable sources.
Majid al Futtaim is one of the leading GCC investors in Oman and has invested heavily in the Sultanate’s retail, leisure, and entertainment infrastructure in support of the National Strategy for Tourism 2040.
It has also acquired joint venture partners and opened 29 screens at three VOX Cinemas at the Mall of Oman, Muscat Grand Mall, and City Centre Suhar in the last three years.
These five centers have as many as 15 screens catering to both the citizens and expatriate populations. The shows in other centers of VOX will continue unchanged.
'We are grateful to all the guests who have supported us over the years and been part of our journey. We are extremely grateful to our staff for their dedication and service and, we are extending our full support to them through the next steps with the aim of redeploying all staff.'
She further said movie lovers can still enjoy cinematic experiences at its eight locations across Oman.
VOX has plans to open Snow Oman, which will mark a major milestone in the conglomerate's investment strategy in the Sultanate.
