Oman is in a 'back to school' mood as almost all schools, both public and private schools, announced their intent to resume 100 per cent physical classes starting this academic year.
While government schools for the Omani children are to resume classes early September, international schools and private, community and other schools have announced their re-opening dates as well as schedules for all classes in full strength.
While Indian School Muscat (ISM), the largest community expat school is to begin regular classes from Monday, the CBSE school of Indian School Wadi Kabir (ISWK) began classes on August 3 while the Cambridge School and Bangladesh School resumed classes on Sunday.
Indian School Al Ghubra (ISG) has already begun its regular classes on August 2. 'It's a happy sad moment when schools begin in full capacity,' says Prathiksha Shinon, a class-8 student of a private school. 'Happy for seeing all my friends in school uniforms and resuming our playground, whereas I'm sad because I will be missing the actions at home,' Prathiksha, second child of her parents said.
The Ministry of Education announced stoppage of classes at all schools in March 2020 as a preventive measure against the pandemic and asked all schools to stop regular classes. Online classes were started after a few days since the closure which continued for two years. In early 2022, Oman withdrew restrictions on Covid-19 in several stages, schools began functioning partially.
According to the statistics received from the Ministry of Education, the number of public schools has increased and there are 1,130 government schools in the country catering to nearly 600,000 students. Private schools and international schools too saw a 10 per cent increase and there are around 640 schools catering to 148,464 students.
There are 748,464 students currently enrolled in all schools in the Sultanate of Oman and nearly 66,000 teachers in private and public schools too, according to the report. The present teacher-student ratio in public schools is 1 teacher for every 10.2 students, while the ratio in private schools stands at 1 teacher for every 11 students.
The report further says that girls accounted for 60.8 per cent of the total number of students last year.
