Muscat: Ban on visitors to Al Mughsayl beach in the Dhofar Governorate was lifted on Monday after the authorities closed it due to search and rescue operations.
Due to the heavy rains and and non-adherence to instructions, directives, and warnings, the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority had decided to close all tourist destinations in Oman until the weather situation improved.
Wadi crossings, even though it is a punishable offence, have also been a major hassle for the authorities during the week that had seen the influence of the trough from low pressure area that was located north of India. The rescue operations also saw bringing to safety individuals and families who were stranded in their homes as their areas experienced heavy rainfall and strong flow of wadis.
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) called on visitors to adhere to public safety guidelines and not to go beyond the safety barrier, pay attention to children, not leave them alone and stay away from dangerous places and rocky edges.
Major Saud al Maamari of the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) said the concerned authorities have been evaluating the accident site at Al Mughsayl.
He said safety barriers at the location will be changed to prevent visitors from crossing them at any point time.
The site was closed after the tragic accident that occurred last week, when eight people were washed away after they jumped over the protective barrier at the site. Three of them were rescued at that time and while bodies of four people, including a child were found later.
Al Mughsayl beach in Salalah is considered one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Salalah. People flock to Al Mughsayl beach to enjoy the heights near the beach with its blow hole and the massive waves of the Arabian Sea.
The Arabian Sea is characterised by high waves these days and authorities warn against swimming.
Visitors from the Sultanate of Oman and abroad are travelling to the Governorate of Dhofar to enjoy the khareef season, which is characterised by tropical weather and moderate temperatures.
All tourist sites except Al Mughsayl beach in Dhofar were reopened last week after 16 people lost their lives and 40 were rescued in different governorates during the rains that resulted from low pressure over the Arabian Sea since July 7.
