A large number of yoga enthusiasts took part in the 8th International Day of Yoga (IDY) in several parts of the Sultanate of Oman on Tuesday. Yoga events took place in Salalah, Suhar, Nizwa, Sur and many other cities, while the main event happened in Muscat at Indian School Muscat.
More than 1,500 people, including Omani nationals, children and other members of the diaspora, took part in the event.
The theme for this year’s IDY is ‘Yoga for Humanity’. After the ease in Covid-19 restrictions, the event is happening with the physical participation of yoga enthusiasts and learners.
Embassy of India in Muscat and the Indian School Muscat jointly organised the main event, which was graced by Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed al Shanfari, Chief of West Asia department.
Amit Narang, Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, expressed gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the people of the Sultanate of Oman for their gracious support.
He also thanked all the yoga organisations, schools and participants. He said the theme ‘Yoga for Humanity’ chosen for the 8th International Day of Yoga reflected the importance of holistic health in these challenging times. He added that the ancient sciences of ayurveda and yoga had been the greatest gift of India to the world.
As part of the celebrations, a common yoga protocol was conducted. A soulful rendition by Vineeth Pandit of his own composition on yoga was presented while a short video of yoga performed at the iconic Riyam Park as a run-up to the International Day of Yoga 2022 was also screened.
The celebration marked the culmination of the unique one-of-a-kind Yoga Marathon ‘Muscat Yog Mahotsav-75 day, 75 events’ launched on April 8. Muscat Yog Mahotsav featured 75 curated yoga events across the Sultanate of Oman, including the cities of Muscat, Salalah, Suhar, and Sur, for 75 days till June 21.
