Four-day heatwave likely as dust storm clears

Just as the dust storm has cleared, the Sultanate of Oman is experiencing a heatwave which will remain until Thursday. According to the weather expert at Oman Met Office, the temperatures across the coastal areas of Oman Sea and the Arabian Sea could touch above 45 degrees Celsius.

Oman Meteorology has warned of high temperatures in Al Amerat (46ºC) Bausher (45ºC), Wadi al Maawil (45ºC) and Al Awabi (44ºC). Dima W'attayeen was the hottest place in the country with a maximum temperature of 49.9ºC during the last 24 hours.

It has urged people to take necessary measures to avoid sunstrokes and heat exhaustion, especially workers who are exposed to sunlight and high temperatures.

Mainly clear skies are expected over most of the governorates, with chances of late night to early morning low-level clouds or fog patches over parts of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates.

MID-DAY BREAK

The Ministry of Labour has urged companies to take necessary measures to avoid the effects of high temperatures in workplaces, especially during the months from June-August.

Shaikh Nasr bin Amer al Hosni, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, speaking at the 'Heat Stress Forum' on Sunday spoke of the importance of mandatory implementation of the Ministry of Labour’s decision to ban work at construction sites and open spaces during noon hours from June to August.

The under-secretary said: 'The ministry will work to complete the efforts to activate the heat stress campaign this year, and stop work between 12:30 to 3:30 pm during the months of June, July and August on a daily basis in open places which can expose workers to the dangers of the hot sun.'
