Suhar Airport to get boost with more flights

SalamAir has introduced two new direct routes, which also include linking the port city Suhar with Jeddah for the first time.

The Oman-based budget airline is also planning to start direct flights from Suhar to Kozhikode and the announcement is expected soon, a recent statement said.

It may be noted that the number of passengers through Salalah Airport increased by 134 per cent to reach 906,727 at the end of last year, while Suhar and Duqm airports witnessed an increase in passenger traffic by the end of 2021 by 54 per cent and 95 per cent, respectively.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, five airlines are operating from Suhar Airport and discussions are under way with Oman Air and SalamAir to start international operations from there.

Three airlines operate to Shiraz in Iran from the port city. 'As home to one of the largest ports in the region, Suhar Airport offers big scope for cargo and freight services in the future, apart from business travellers,' a source at Oman Airports told the Observer.

Suhar Airport was opened on November 18, 2014, before the completion of the passenger terminal building and Oman Air operated an inaugural flight to mark the official opening.

International flights from Suhar Airport commenced in 2017, with Air Arabia service to Sharjah.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, 'The North Al Batinah will be one of the main centres for international trade and will play a major role due to industries, availability of minerals, and agriculture. The governorate will have a population of 1.3 million, of which 550,00 will be in Suhar, with a workforce of 650,000 with Omanis constituting 34 per cent of them.'

The airline has also announced a flight between Salalah to Kozhikode, apart from the resumption of two seasonal flights Salalah to Jeddah and Salalah to Medina.

On the expansion of routes to India, Captain Mohamed Ahmed, CEO of SalamAir, said, “Our aim is always to provide our customers with greater connectivity and convenience, and the addition of these routes will cater to the expatriate population, business travellers, and tourists. Our strategic cooperation with Oman Air enables us to serve the Indian market and augment demand and traffic volume, thus fulfilling the Oman Vision 2040.'

'The number of flights between the Sultanate of Oman and Saudi Arabia will be increased to boost the movement of tourists and trade between the two countries,' sources at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT) told the Observer recently.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Monday granted approval for the Iranian Pars Air to operate two weekly flights from Shiraz to Muscat International Airport, starting on May 4, 2022.
