SQU organises intellectual forum on genetically modified foods

MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Wednesday organised the 10th Intellectual Forum 'Genetically Modified Foods - an Ethical and Scientific Perspective' at SQU's Conference Hall.
The opening of the forum was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Dr Fahd al Julanda al Said, SQU Vice-Chancellor, Chairman of the National Bioethics Committee.
The forum shed light on the need for genetically modified food and the international and regional laws and regulations in this respect.
Shaikh Dr Kahlan Nabhan al Kharusi, Assistant Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman, Deputy Chairman of the National Bioethics Committee, said in his speech at the event that the committee has been holding intellectual forums which included specialized researchers and scholars from Oman and abroad.
He added that these forums aim to identify the ethical and scientific aspects of the forums' topics in order to come up with a clear vision, spread awareness, build research capabilities, and benefit from the recommendations and proposals of the National Bioethics Committee to be submitted to the authorities concerned.
The event aimed to present the ethical and scientific aspects of genetically modified food, raising community awareness about it, and knowing how safe it is. -- ONA
