Amur good Olympic medal prospect: Coach

Muscat: Mazin al Badri, head coach of Oman weightlifting team, said that lifter Amur al Khanjari has the capability to become an Olympic champion for the Sultanate if the requirements and needs provided to him in a sufficient time. “Despite the challenges of Covid pandemic on Amur’s preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, he managed to finish second in his Group B and 10th in the overall order. We have prepared an intensive plan for Amur to develop him to an Olympic champion. The plan is presented to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and to the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) officials. The plan featured many main factors which will assist the lifter to become the Sultanate’s Olympic star’’, he said.

Explaining some essential requirements, the Iraqi coach said: ‘‘Continuous domestic camp at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher and permanent accommodation for the weightlifter is required as this will help him to train twice daily instead of returning back to his home in Maabela (Seeb). Overseas camps for a period of three months every year. This international step will raise the technical performance of Amur and will expose him to the other competing environment in different parts of the world.”

“Taking part in six top international, regional and continental championships each year will allow him to earn the direct ticket to the Olympics and world championships events. The world ranking events will start in second quarter of 2022. Providing nutritional supplements for the whole year is necessary along with his daily required supplements which will help him to perform better during the training sessions and the top events. Presence of physio therapist for the weightlifter is needed to maintain health and fitness ahead of taking part in any top weightlifting events or the training sessions’’, the coach pointed out.

The Iraqi coach assured that he will update the top officials in the Ministry and OOC on the technical progress of the weightlifter. “I am optimistic that Amur will get the required support as the Ministry recently established a ministerial committee for the athletes of high performance’’, he concluded.

Amur al Khanjari made his debut in Tokyo 2020 Olympics last month as runner-up in men’s 81kg weightlifting group B event and 10th overall in the category. The 20-year-old managed to register his personal best record in his debut as he lifted a total 317 kg adding 4 kg to his previous record.
