Indian expat’s short film gets entry to Cannes film fest

A short film made by an expat Indian is making its headway into Cannes film fest and it has already secured entry into the London Short Film Festival (LSFF).
A letter acknowledging that the film has been nominated to the LSFF was received by the producer and director of the movie recently. The film has also been selected for Berlin international film festival.
The 15 minutes long shortie titled ‘Dog Bothers’, produced under the banner of Gr8 AV Productions by Gopakumar G Nair, a cameraman in the region is based on a real incident and sheds light on the hard realities of life in many parts of rural India.
The film Scripted and directed by Viswan who hails from Kuthirambara in Thiruvilwamala conveys a strong message to the public and makes them understand the importance of food and with a conscience to society.
The film was inspired by the life of a mentally challenged 27-year-old tribal youth, who was beaten to death by a group of people in a hamlet in a tribal village in Kerala. The tribal youth was caught by a group of people, tied up for several hours, and reportedly beaten with sticks for stealing rice and other food items from shops in the area. The man was later handed over to the police but died on his way to the hospital. It tells the politics of poverty and hunger.
Children from Director Viswan’s own village play key roles in the film.
The others who worked on the 15-minited long film include Vijesh Kappara (photography and editing), Sunil Kumar PK, and Ganesh Marar (sound). The film will be screened in the final round of the competition at the Cannes World Film Festival in France in 2022.
The other films selected for the final round of Cannes are from the US and UK.
Already secured nomination to the Cannes festival and several other prominent festivals in India and abroad, the film is aiming at the Muscat International Film Festival (MIFF) when it's open after the pandemic.
