Sprinter Barakat aims to advance and break personal best

The Sultanate’s top domestic sprinter, Barakat al Harthy is all set to for action in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Barakat will represent the Sultanate in the Olympics for the third consecutive time after London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The Men’s 100 meter preliminary heat two will begin at 6:43 am (Oman time) at Olympic Stadium. The weightlifter Amur will look to gain the requisite experience and obtain valuable lessons from this significant event as he will be in action on Saturday at 6:50 am (Oman time).

Barakat, who hails originally from Ibra, will target this edition to show his top performance despite the tough expected competition from world ranking runners who will attend and compete for the Olympic medals.

The 33-year-old is familiar with the competition status in the Olympic events and gained the right experience which will assist in showing different display during this Olympic Games and he will seek the top desired level and breaking his personal best.

The exceptional and difficult circumstances of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak impacted on the preparatory of the athletes and national teams.

However, Oman Athletics Association (OAA) in coordination with the concerned parties in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Oman Olympic Committee seek for alternative solutions to secure proper conditions and environment for sprinters to resume and complete the preparatory programs ahead of taking part in the forthcoming championships including Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The gold medalist at the World Military Games in 2015 is fully set to kick off his official participation in Tokyo Olympics after an intensive training program during the past months. Ibra boy had long period overseas camp in Antalya city in Turkey.

The abroad gathering witnessed participation in many open and friendly athletics events beside many top runners who came to have camps as well in Turkey.

The selection of the Turkey camp came due to the proper weather conditions, the availability of many international teams and athletes, the organisation of many tournaments and open forums and providing the right environment for the Sultanate’s runners to shape themselves for the Olympics assignment.

Barakat, bronze medalist at the Asian Games at Guangzhou in 2010, managed during overseas preparatory camp in Turkey to achieve advanced results including his initial participation at the International Athletics Open tournament in Turkey which was held in mid of April.

He had snatched the first place in the 100-meter distance running after he completed the distance with a timing of (10.49 seconds).

The Olympic runner, who won the award for the best athlete in the Sultanate in 2010, managed to adjust his record during his second official participation in one of the open events of athletics in Antalya, which was held in late April.

He succeeded to end the distance set for the race and clocked (10.33 seconds) with a difference of 16 seconds from his previous number in the last participation.

In his third participation in Turkey Open friendly Athletics Championship, he finished the 100-meter race with a timing of 10.37 seconds and claimed the first place award.

After completion of Turkey camp, Barakat, accompanied with his national coach Mohammed al Hooti, headed to Tunisia to take part in the 22nd Arabian Athletics Championship which was held in the previous month from June 16 to 20.

During this top Arabian event, Barakat had claimed two medals for the Sultanate as he bagged bronze in the 100 meters distance running competition with a timing of 10.43 seconds while he captured silver medal in the 4x100 meters relay team competitions and clocking a time of 39.95 seconds.

Commenting ahead of the race, Barakat said that Tokyo 2020 Olympic will be tough as many of the top sprinters will take part.

“I am in good shape to show my best performance. The target is to advance into final stages and register new records,” he ended

Amur ready for Olympic debutant

Oman’s young weightlifter Amur al Khanjari aims to achieve a positive participation for the Sultanate in his debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He will take part in weightlifting competitions at 81 kg weight category at Tokyo International Forum on Saturday.

Showing an outstanding performance and delivering high technical levels to compete against other opponents are the top two goals which will be under focus of the talented weightlifter Amur al Khanjari.

The 21-year-old - was the athlete who was accredited to the Sultanate's delegation in Olympics after obtaining an Olympic invitation card to participate in the showpiece event.

Weightlifter Amer bin Salem Al-Khanjari, who had completed his third secondary schools exams a few days ago, seeks not to participate in this Olympic Games only for participation but will certainly look to have the right exposure, maximize technical lessons and provide his highest levels against world’s top champions.

This will enable him to compete with the rest of his opponents who are participating from different part of the world in the same category competitions of 81 kg weights.

Returning to the selection process of the weightlifter Amur in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through the invitation card, he had showed his remarkable performance in the Arab Weightlifting Championship in 2018.

Mazoon finish in sixth place

Oman’s sprinter Mazoon al Alawi finished sixth in the preliminary heat three of the 100m race event on Friday at Olympic Stadium at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The 24 years clocked 12:35 seconds in sixth place. Lloyd Joella (ANT) took the first place in a time of 11.55 while Simwaka Asimenye (MAW) was the runner up in a time of 11.76s. TehuPeiory Alvin (INA) finished third in a time of 11.89s. Scicluna Carla (MLT) qualified to round one as she clocked 12.11s in fourth place.
