Rare Matak trees in Manah

 
There are many plants and trees in the various governorates of the Sultanate that adapt to the environment in which they grow. Manah in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah is distinguished by the presence of the rare locally called “Al-Matak” tree, which represents a social value for the people. It is the emblem of the willayat and is used to treat some diseases.

Suwaid Al Tobi from the village of Al-Ma’ara in the Wilayat of Manah is one of those interested in studying this tree, and said that the tree is one of the rare trees in the Sultanate that only grows in the Al Ain neighborhood in Al-Ma’ara. It is known for its medium size, short branches, small sticky leaves and bitter taste. It grows by one to one and a half meters above the level of the ground, and its roots spread in a depth of 80 cm with a length of more than three meters.

He added that the tree has many benefits for people in the traditional medical treatment, and its sweet-tasting roots are used to treat some diseases. After taking the roots of the tree, they are thoroughly cleaned of impurities and cut into small pieces after adding a little water to be used then to treat asthma, acidity and colic.

He explained that the tree is used to treat and resist poisons and is also used against snakes and scorpions’ stings, and its lower roots extracted from the ground can be chewed, which contain very sweet substances with low calories. poisonous reptiles avoid approaching the places where the tree grows.

He pointed to the role of the people of the region in preserving the tree due to its rarity and importance, and for fear of extinction, by replanting it in several places in the village. The number of the tree decreased due to water shortages and the outbreak of fires that destroyed some of them.
