As part of the ongoing efforts to protect and promote human rights in the Sultanate of Oman, the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) celebrated International Human Rights Day under the slogan 'The Pillar of the Nation: Sustainable Steps to Protect and Promote the Rights of the Elderly in the Sultanate of Oman' under the auspices of Shaikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council.

This year’s celebration focused on the elderly, in appreciation of their pivotal role in building the nation and their effective contribution in various areas of life. The Sultanate of Oman is keen to provide comprehensive care for this group and guarantee their basic rights. The event confirmed the Oman Human Rights Commission’s commitment to raising awareness of the rights of the elderly and highlighting the efforts made to guarantee their rights.

The celebration programme included various events, such as the screening of a documentary film highlighting the elderly and explaining their role as a fundamental pillar in the national development process. It also included a theatrical scene depicting the challenges facing the elderly, aiming to raise awareness in the society about the importance of supporting the elderly and addressing the difficulties they face. This was followed by a visual presentation addressing the most important reports and complaints related to the rights of the elderly, and how the Oman Human Rights Commission deals with them, along with national statistics shedding light on the reality of this group in Oman.

Dr Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), said: “This year’s celebration came in appreciation of a dear and precious group in all our hearts, namely the elderly who contributed their efforts and giving to building this country. They are a national wealth and a societal value that we must all protect and promote their rights in a way that guarantees them a dignified and safe life.”

He added: “We also appreciate the national efforts made, and express our pride in honouring the most prominent pioneering initiatives and projects in the field of protecting and promoting the rights of the elderly. At the Oman Human Rights Commission, we work according to a clear vision and a lofty mission to promote and protect human rights in Oman, raise community awareness of these rights, and address complaints and issues related to them. Within this framework, our celebration aims to highlight the efforts made and renew the pledge to continue protecting the rights of the elderly and enhancing their position as a fundamental pillar in building the nation.”
