SALALAH: Dhofar Governorate is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and has steadily evolved into a sought-after year-round tourist destination. While the Khareef season, from June to September, brings lush greenery and cooler temperatures, Dhofar offers much more beyond these months, drawing tourists to its vibrant landscapes, rich history, and cultural attractions throughout the year.

The region stands out for its diverse geographical features, providing an array of tourism opportunities ranging from ecological adventures to heritage tours. Dhofar’s well-established infrastructure enhances its appeal, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.

As the Khareef season winds down, Dhofar transitions into a period marked by milder weather, attracting European and Gulf tourists eager to escape the colder climates of their home countries. This period allows visitors to enjoy Dhofar's stunning beaches, rugged mountains, and historical sites in a comfortable climate, perfect for outdoor activities.

During the recent 'Marhaba Dhofar' event, Marwan Al Ghassani, Director of Tourism Promotion for Dhofar Governorate at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, highlighted the growing influx of European tourists during the winter months. Charter flights from countries such as Germany, Italy, and Poland have significantly boosted the region’s visibility as a global tourist destination.

Al Ghassani noted that Dhofar expects over 97,749 tourists on 475 charter flights between October 2023 and May 2024. This surge reflects Oman’s strategic efforts to promote Dhofar as a must-visit location, contributing substantially to the country’s economy and aligning with national goals for economic diversification.

Winter tourism is increasingly important in Oman’s overall tourism strategy. Al Ghassani emphasised, "Dhofar offers something for everyone." Whether hiking in the mountains, relaxing on pristine beaches, or exploring ancient cultural sites, the region caters to diverse interests.

Local tour operators, like Ahmed Al Mahri, confirm the growing interest in eco-tourism and desert adventures. Popular activities include mountain hikes, cave explorations, and desert camping. "The weather after Khareef is ideal for outdoor activities," Al Mahri stated, noting that visitors seek authentic Omani culture through rural village tours.

These developments in tourism drive significant growth in the local economy, benefiting businesses from large resorts to small family-owned shops. Traditional markets, like the Al Haffa Souq see increased demand for Omani goods such as frankincense and handcrafted items. Local shop owner Umm Salem remarked, "Tourists are eager to purchase local products, which helps support our community."

The MoHT promotes Dhofar through targeted campaigns and international tourism exhibitions. Their focus is on showcasing Dhofar not just as a seasonal destination but as a year-round tourist haven.

As Dhofar’s tourism infrastructure expands, with ongoing improvements to facilities and services, the region is poised to attract even more visitors. Cruise ships docking at Salalah Port have also contributed to tourism growth, bringing thousands of visitors who further boost the local economy.

Dhofar’s success as a year-round destination highlights its potential to become a central player in Oman’s tourism industry, essential for the nation’s broader economic diversification efforts. The region's natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and robust infrastructure ensure it will remain a key destination for global travelers in the years to come.
