Continuing efforts through the 'We Reach You' campaign aim to increase community awareness of the services and programmes provided by the Ministry of Social Development to various beneficiary groups, including families, the elderly, people with disabilities, and others, as well as its oversight of civil society institutions.
Safiya al Amiri, Director of the Department of Elderly Affairs at the Ministry of Social Development, stated, 'The ministry's approach to providing services to the elderly is based on assessing their needs and preferences through a sustainable system that emphasises empowerment, integration and capacity development, and upholds human rights, social capital and effective partnerships.'
Key services provided to the elderly include support tools like prosthetic devices and various medical aids. The home care programmes assess each case and provide necessary devices based on medical recommendations and regulatory guidelines set by the Ministry of Social Development Resolution No 235/2014.
The 'Alternative Family' programme also plays a vital role in supporting the elderly by ensuring they remain in their communities. When elderly individuals lack familial support, the ministry seeks alternative families to provide essential care.
The National Programme for the Care of the Elderly offers psychological, social guidance and counselling services, along with social and recreational activities. It also trains families to care for their elderly relatives at home based on the 'Guide to the Care of the Elderly'. Additionally, the programme focuses on preparing homes for low-income elderly individuals according to their needs and health status.
To enhance public awareness and support for the elderly, the ministry promotes the involvement of elderly individuals in social, economic and political aspects of community life. The 'Guidance Guide to the Care of the Elderly' serves as a valuable resource for volunteers and home care providers, helping them interact effectively with this demographic.
The 'Awareness Bag' initiative targets students across all educational levels in Oman to educate them about elderly issues, promote family cohesion, foster respect for the elderly and encourage community engagement related to elderly care.
