A partial lunar eclipse can be witnessed in the Sultanate today, according to the Oman Astronomical Society.
Osama al Busaidy from the society said: “The event can be observed from 7.50 pm until 12.50 am.” Oman Astronomical Society, situated at the Airport Hills, has invited the public to witness the phenomenon.
Five telescopes have been lined up not only for watching the moon, but also the planets Saturn and Jupiter.
“We do have light pollution but Saturn and Jupiter are going to be bright,” said Al Busaidy.
Meanwhile, a group has geared up for the night to watch the earth cast its shadow on the moon.
Astronomy Pioneer Projects, a company incubated at the National Business Centre (NBC), is organising an event to allow the general public to observe the partial lunar
eclipse at the Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) today.
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) Planetarium and Astronomical Solutions Company are also participating in the event.
Issam al Salhi, Executive Director of Astronomy Pioneer Projects, said although the sub-shadow eclipse will commence at 7:50 pm, it is difficult to observe through the naked eye until the moon enters the earth’s shadow at 9:22 pm.
The moon will stay in this area until 11:18 pm.
The end of the eclipse will be at 12:50 am.
Al Salhi said the public will also witness planets Jupiter and Saturn.
They will be able to enjoy the beauty of the planets with the help of astronomical telescopes at the event.
