Veg on trend

By Sayeh Woodman — Spuds are on top, as celery has been named the worst and most hated vegetable in the UK!!!

Brits are turning up their noses at certain vegetables and it’s the new thing that’s hitting social media on voting what’s in and what’s out when it comes to eating vegetables! Whatever next!? Celery isn’t on his own, avocado; sprouts, turnip and kale were also singled out as the least loved vegetables.

Parsnips, squash, beetroot and leeks rounded out the best, and seem to be on top of the list.  Especially when it comes to the traditional dish on a Sunday to eat, the Sunday roast. What was the number one vegetable?

The humble spud was crowned the nation’s favorite veg, beating carrots, peas, tomatoes and broccoli. I guess this is down to its diversity, from roast potatoes, to hash browns to the French fries, you’ve got to love the potato right?!

Social media reports have revealed that although the avocado was named as the most ‘pinned’ ingredient on Pinterest in 2015, one in five adults have never actually eaten one. To be fair, it was only a few years ago where I tried one and ended up loving it.  It’s great in sandwiches with chicken.

Children voted Brussels sprouts their least favourite veg, that vegetable always seems to be left on the plate at the end of a Christmas dinner, so why have it in the first place, I wonder?!

Most people though stick to what they know, when it comes to food, especially vegetables. Not enough vegetables are consumed when it comes to dietary needs.  A vegetable is just a quick snack as is junk food, it works out the same price, and it tastes better and in turn is better for you.  Raw vegetables are the best, especially when accompanied with your favorite dip. Our children tend to follow suit to us, with our eating habits obviously.

Starting them off young paves the way for success when it comes to food, goodness and trying new foods.  I’m lucky to have a daughter who tries new foods with no fuss, will share her opinion if she likes or dislikes a particular food.

More importantly her diet is fantastic, full of fruit and vegetables with the occasional treat.  She would much sooner have olives, beetroot, and carrots than chocolates and cake!

I wanted to share this list of top 5 vegetables – when it comes to adult and children likes…

Favourite veggies for adults

1. Potato | 2. Carrot | 3. Peas | 4. Tomato  | 5. Broccoli

Favourite veggies for children

1. Potatoes | 2. Carrots | 3. Peas | 4. Cucumber | 5. Sweet corn

It’s really interesting to see how parents’ likes and dislikes affect their children’s choices.

It is important that our children are eating and choosing good foods themselves - what vegetables to eat – so we need to show them how delicious vegetables are to, by eating them ourselves. So, you know what you’ll be having for dinner tonight?!  Fancy a jacket potato with a nice filling?
