Traditional fishing output up 6 per cent to 93,000 tonnes

MUSCAT: The total quantity of fishes produced by artisan fishing stood at 93,000 tonnes by the end of March this year, an increase of 6.1 per cent compared with the same period last year.


The total value of fish produced by artisan fishing in the first quarter of this year stood at RO 57.8 million down 2.3 per cent compared to the same period of last year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The highest amount of fish produced by artisan fishing was registered in Al Wusta Governorate with 29,553 tonnes followed by South Al Sharqiyah Governorate with 24,124 tonnes, North Al Batinah and South Al Sharqiyah governorates 12,767 tonnes, Dhofar Governorate 12,019 tonnes, Musandam 7,612 tonnes and Muscat Governorate produced 6,918 tonnes.


Small surface fishes accounted for the greater part of artisan fishing registering 47,666 tonnes compared with 42,174 tonnes produced in the corresponding period last year.


The quantity of large surface fishes dropped 1.8 per cent to reach 22,025 tonnes at the end of March compared with 22,425 tonnes in the first quarter of 2016.
