NEW YORK: The Sultanate was elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (UN-CLCS) during the first committee meeting which was held in New York from June 12 to 16, which was allocated to elect its new members for the period from 2017 to 2022.

The Sultanate nominated Ambassador Dr Adnan bin Rashid al Azri, Adviser of the Sultanate’s Continental Shelf Project at the Foreign Ministry, to one of the five Asian seats along with Japan, Malaysia, China and South Korea.

Sultanate won the membership with 157 votes, the second highest votes after the Japanese candidate.

The Sultanate hopes that its presence as an active member of the UN-CLCS will have a positive role in supporting the Sultanate’s request to extend the continental shelf. — ONA
